Understanding the Influence of Additives on Gas Fade Discoloration of Polylethylene Resins

Fraser Waldie
Material Advances and Their Benefits

Discoloration of polyethylene resins can be induced via a number of different mechanisms. In particular, gas fading continues to be one of the most problematic sources of color plaguing the film packaging industry. While the occurrence and underlying causes of gas fading in the flexible packaging industry have been well documented over the years, there is an absence of fundamental understanding of the underlying mechanism(s). An overview of the numerous factors which affect the extent and severity of gas fading will be presented along with recent advances for mitigating or eliminating its onset.
