The Effects of Surface Treatment on Heat Seal and Hot Tack

The Effects of Surface Treatment on Heat Seal and Hot Tack

When forming the rim of a paperboard container, such as a coffee cup, one key to success is the integrity of the seal which is typically composed of a LDPE (poly) coated paperboard. As the line speeds of the paperboard converting processes continue to increase, the rim seals on finished items can often be compromised. This detailed study looks at the effects of process conditions, such as surface treatment and oxidation, on seal reliability. Laboratory hot tack and heat seal measurements are correlated to cup performance under various process conditions, allowing performance optimization.
