Developments Driven by Industry and Market Trends

The advent of more complex multilayer blown film coextrusion technology and the development of a high barrier high density polyethylene (HDPE) have facilitated many new options in food packaging. This study was done to identify and develop film structures for the food service industry. Fresh poultry was found to be a high growth area with specific packaging needs. Three and five layer structure designs were produced and evaluated for key properties, including Oxygen Transmission Rate (OTR), Moisture Vapour Transmission Rate (OTR), Elmendorf tear resistance, dart impact and bending stiffness.
