Raw material reduction, or the so-called prevention of raw materials entering the packaging stream is an important tool to reduce the end-of-life burden of packaging products. Resource efficiency via source reduction offers reduced municipal solid waste burden, greenhouse gas/CO2 footprint, and water usage. The increased usage of flexible packaging versus non-flexible packaging materials delivers greater resource efficiency and provide clear options for the Europe 2020 Strategy to achieve resource efficiency and growth in Europe. This paper will explore the benefits of replacing non-flexible packaging with flexible packaging.
